THE SHAPE OF WATER (2017) Review

Del Toro’s tale of love and daydream achieves visual landmarks higher than many films of the (fish love story…?) genre. The modern noir ambiance of this film details fantasy for the outcast… until it got weird. I understand that her love affair with the monster was not supposed to focus on their intimacies per se, it was just very difficult to cast aside. Sally Hawkins delivers an emotional performance that warranted more recognition, given her character’s emotions were expressed for the most part physically, and were felt better than most speaking performances. Technically and visually, this film was absolutely astonishing. Within its fantasy, there is much to be left desired.

A fantastic technical achievement in which the writing and story take a backseat to the smaller details. The "fairy-tale" tone doesn't fit, especially since it is only present for a total of about 20 minutes. It ends up leaving you unsatisfied, and rather than talking about its themes afterwards you'll only be praising the technical elements.
