ISLE OF DOGS (2018) Review

I'm pretty convinced that Wes Anderson lives on top of a mountain, in solitude, with posters of far-away lands in his workspace. His latest creation, ISLE OF DOGS, is in its core a beautiful and soft story about a boy and his dog done entirely in stop-motion and with his classic, pale charm. Yes, Anderson manages to set the story in Japan (which it doesn’t need to be), and inserts an american exchange student as a conspiracy theorist turned revolutionary (who was unnecessary as a character); however, the main story and lovable canine characters more than make up for these faux- “paw” s. Rex and Atari’s relationship works very well, and is predictable, but it is executed so well that it is very easy to look past. Aesthetically pleasing and what many would call pretentious, Anderson squeaks out another amiable and engaging stop-motion worthy of your tears and laughter.
Score: 7.8/10
