I, TONYA (2017) Review

Fun, fast-paced, and chock full of outstanding performances, I, TONYA hits the mark as a feature film based on real life. Robbie gives the best performance of her career as the red-neck triple axel achiever, and gives life to Harding’s self-told struggles outside the Kerrigan discourse. Gillespie’s dark satire works not as a telling of events, as his seamless perspective shifts ensures the viewer stay hooked to the telling of each current event, and the viewer often does not realize who is recounting until the perspective shifts again. Each character has a slightly different telling of events, and you’re left wondering at the end who is telling the truth. While it is one-sided in the Harding vs Kerrigan debate, Gillespie manages to detail a life story without coming to a definitive conclusion, which is perfect in this context.
