FIRST MAN (2018) Review

Updated: Jan 21, 2019

An astonishing achievement in visuals and sound, Chazelle's third feature film is an inspired and revolutionary portrayal of Neil Armstrong's triumphant journey. Where it lacked a little in it's preliminary unfocused writing, the film makes up for it in tremendously breathtaking sequences and beautiful performances from both Gosling and Foy. The quiet intersectionality of Armstrong’s two completely juxtaposed lifestyles is very smooth. The film's last act will leave you breathless, and the immersion felt held a gravitas like no other.

The film will revolutionize your philosophy of space and the moon landing. Never had we seen such an awe-inspiring portrayal of discovery before "First Man." It is only dragged down by a shaky and unfocused first half, but the conclusion more than makes up for the movie's missteps. Chazelle has surely cemented himself as one of the most consistent filmmakers active today.
